The Short Answer

Maryland’s summers are hot and humid — shade turns a pool deck into an all-day destination rather than a place to retreat from midday sun. The most popular and durable options near Maryland pools are timber or cedar pergolas, freestanding pavilions, and tensioned shade sails. The right choice depends on where you want shade, how permanent the structure should be, and your budget. Wade designs and builds pergolas and shade structures as part of complete pool and outdoor living projects.

Shade Structure Options

  • Timber or cedar pergola: Wade’s most common shade structure. Freestanding or house-attached. Cedar, pressure-treated pine, and tropical hardwoods (ipe, cumaru) all perform well in Maryland’s humid climate. Provides partial shade (dappled sun through rafters), frames the outdoor room, creates structure for climbing plants or string lights. Can cover a kitchen, dining table, or poolside seating area. Cost: $8,000–$25,000+ depending on size and material.
  • Freestanding pavilion or cabana: A pergola with a solid or semi-solid roof — polycarbonate panel, metal roofing, or synthetic thatch. Provides full rain protection — a genuinely all-weather outdoor room. With a fan, lighting, and outdoor kitchen underneath, a pavilion becomes the anchor of the entire backyard. On the Eastern Shore and Bay waterfront, pavilions capture prevailing Bay breezes and make outdoor dining comfortable on humid evenings. Cost: $25,000–$60,000+.
  • Tensioned shade sails: Triangular or rectangular fabric panels stretched between posts or attachment points. Contemporary aesthetic, good UV protection (90%+ UV block with quality shade cloth). Lower cost, smaller footprint. Should be removed or lowered during major storms and heavy snow. Cost: $3,000–$8,000 installed.
  • Retractable awnings: Motorized awning mounted to the house covers a patio or deck area adjacent to the home. Best for the dining zone close to the house; limited reach for poolside lounge areas farther from the structure. Cost: $4,000–$12,000 for motorized with wind sensors.

Where to Position Shade

The west side of the pool catches afternoon sun — the most intense and hottest exposure. A shade structure on the west or southwest side of the pool provides the most cooling benefit on hot Maryland afternoons. Wade’s typical recommendation: shade in two zones — a covered dining/cooking area (pergola or pavilion) and a separate shaded lounge area adjacent to the pool. These don’t have to be the same structure, and the two-zone approach prevents the backyard from feeling like one flat patio with a pool in it.
